Jon Rahm’s recent 5th place finish at the US Masters has further validated his decision to sign a lucrative equipment deal with Callaway Golf which started this year.

Many players including Brooks Koepka deliberately do not sign endorsement deals with equipment manufacturers as they like the freedom they have, to choose what best suits theirgame at a particular time. Koepka currently for example has a mixed bag of Srixon, Taylor Made and Titleist clubs. The best example of a player ruining his game in the interests of a lucrative equipment contract is Corey Pavin. He won the US Open in 1995 at Shinnecock Hills using Cleveland Vas clubs and then disappeared off the radar when he signed a five yearequipment deal with Japanese company PRGR.

At times all of us club golfers can get sucked into the hype involving a particular new product or brand on the market. A friend of mine invested heavily in PXG clubs a couple of years ago. He is still a fine player, but his handicap remains the same and would probably have done so if he had stuck with his bag of Callaway’s.

Most golfers have at least one or two clubs that will rarely leave their golf bag, whether it be a favourite putter or wedge. The oldest club in my bag is a 30 year old Ram Cobalt Wedge, it has seen the good times and plenty of bad times but it still works. Don’t give up on an old favourite just for the sake of it, unfortunately in this game money can’t buy you success.
